Marjan Jones
Tongue Tie Institute
Dr Marjan Jones, a dental surgeon in Brisbane, pioneered a multi-disciplinary approach to the treatment of oral restrictions in Australia. With over 20 years’ experience with dental lasers and extensive knowledge of the treatment of oral restrictions, she has focused her practice on therapy of myofunctional disorders and treatment of tongue ties. She has treated over 8,000 patients from infants to the elderly. This experience has provided a fertile environment to shape and refine her comprehensive approach toward achieving successful and sustained clinical outcomes. A comprehensive approach means looking beyond teeth or the mouth – rather considering the patient as a whole, taking a team approach toward correcting dysfunction as well as taking a functional surgical approach.
While Dr Jones’s focus is on provision of a thorough yet gentle surgery using a cooling laser, her protocol for patients to improve function is through working with various professionals. For children and adult patients, the provision of an oral Myofunctional Therapy program from her in-house therapy team or a speech therapist is critical. For patients of all ages, she supports the contribution of manual therapists (e.g chiropractor or osteopath). For infant patients, she collaborates with IBCLCs and manual therapists to enable functional breastfeeding outcomes. It is this approach that has become the cornerstone of successful and sustained outcomes.
She co-founded the Tongue Tie Institute (TTI) to advance the education of health professionals in the treatment of oral restrictions through this multidisciplinary approach. She now lectures to practitioners from Australia and around the world who have been introduced to this approach in the management of oral restrictions. Having hosted and presented to hundreds of health professionals from many fields in the last 10 TTI courses in Australia, she has also presented in various regional and national conference settings. Her presentations on oral restrictions on an international level include : International Advancing Dentistry Symposium, San Diego, USA; GOLD On-Line Learning International seminars – ‘Michelangelo at work’ and International Consortium of Ankylofrenula Professionals, Tongue Tie across the life-span, Toronto, Canada.
She is a Fellow of the World Clinical Laser Institute, a member of the Academy of Laser Dentistry, the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine and was the immediate past Chairperson of the Board of International Consortium of Ankylofrenula Professionals (ICAP). Her passion for breastfeeding has resulted in studies toward IBCLC certification.
Dr Bob Jacobs
The Parenting Centre
Dr. Bob Jacobs was born in New York City and, although he’s an Australian citizen, he still has quite an accent! Dr. Bob started out his career as a basketball coach and high school teacher. He increasingly found his counselling skills with young people were far better than his skills at coaching winning teams and found himself pursuing a career as a clinical psychologist.
Dr. Bob began practising as a therapist in 1981 after many years working in this field he decided to pursue law as a second career. The decision to become a lawyer was motivated by a desire to be an even stronger advocate for young people, and to use the legal system to bring about individual change and change in public policy.
Dr. Bob has been providing psychology and mediation services through The Parenting Centre since 2009. He earned his legal principal’s certificate in order to establish his own law firm, Change Law. Currently, Dr. Bob works through the Australian Pro Bono centre to provide free legal representation for children and young people.
Despite having a very successful career, Dr. Bob’s greatest personal life experience was raising two of his three children as a single parent. Parenting is Dr. Bob’s personal focus as well as his professional focus.
Dr. Bob is a big sports fan, following mostly American sports (football, baseball, and basketball). He is also an avid scuba diver and his diving has taken him to many amazing places in the world."
